After a stop in recent years due to COVID, one of Catania's most eagerly awaited events is finally back: the Feast of Saint Agatha, Patron Saint of the City.

Saint Agatha was born in Catania in the first decades of the 3rd century and the February feast is linked to her martyrdom in February 251.

The young girl suffered martyrdom by fire at the time of Emperor Decius, at the hands of the consul Quinziano who had fallen madly in love with the girl. Immediately after her death, the people nurtured a great devotion to Agatha and her cult spread even outside the island. Since then, the feast for Saint Agatha has become the most important feast for the city of Catania.

• The festival begins on February 3 with the long and solemn midday procession that goes from the Church of Sant'Agata alla Fornace to the Cathedral, where the ritual of offering the wax takes place.

• The large candelabra known as “Candelora” and the two carriages of the Senate close the procession: an eighteenth-century sedan, followed by another smaller one, which carries the city administrators.

• The same evening the “a sira' u tri” fireworks display is held in Piazza Duomo.

• In the early hours of 4 February, after the Dawn Mass, the reliquary bust of St. Agatha leaves the 'cammaredda' inside the cathedral where it is permanently kept, to undertake the so-called 'external' tour of the city.

• 5 February is the 'climax' of the festival, the most eagerly awaited day. In the afternoon, a fercolo carrying the bust of Saint Agatha leaves Piazza Duomo for the 'inside' tour of the city. The highlights of the procession are punctuated by other firework displays.
